Kenya negotiates with Ethiopia for power supply

Addis Ababa, August 02, 2007 (WIC) – Kenya is in negotiations with Ethiopia for a power supply agreement to forestall a looming power crisis, East African Standard reported from Nairobi, Kenya.

The Paper quoted Kenyan Planning and National Development Minister, Henry Obwocha, as saying that Kenya “is hoping to interconnect its power grid to Zambia and Tanzania as part of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad) funded initiative.

“Ethiopia has a total power demand of about 400 MW against a production capacity of over 1, 875 MW and in principle they have agreed to supply us with power as we continue to develop our generation capacity,” said Obwocha.

The Kenyan Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) spokesperson, Migwi Theuri, said the company expects to connect Ethiopia through a 400Kv power line.

He said a joint memo of understanding, which also involves power generator has already been signed between Kenya and Ethiopia.

According to the memo, Ethiopia is expected to build the transmission line to the border with kenya from where KPLC shall tap the power from to the national grid.

Theuri said the African Development Bank has provided 68 million Kenyan Shilling (one million USD) for the project's feasibility study.
