Ababa, August 16, 2007 (EEPCo) - The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo)
has reportedly connected more than 270,000 new customers while achieving 94
percent performance in generation construction, rehabilitation, maintenance
and other planned activities in the year 2006/07.
Performance in new customer connection, rehabilitation, preventive
maintenance, new line extension and other planned activities under
distribution expansion has been 99 percent of the plan, it was learnt.
Accordingly the performance in the current year exceeds those of
2004/05-2005/06 by 718%, 514%, 170%, 53%, and 56% respectively.
Meanwhile, EEPCo has electrified 758 towns and villages in 2006/07, in the
second year of implementation of the equity principle based Universal
Electrification Access Program meant to electrify 6000 towns and villages up
to 2009/10.

EEPCo
has also, in the stated period, increased access to electricity to 22
percent from 16 percent during 2004/05.
